Because Sometimes the Best Thing You Can Give Your Kid is an Addiction…To Yarn

Spinnin’ Around

I’m spinning!

A couple of weeks ago, I purchased a Kromski Sonata travel wheel.  Why?  Because I’m an idiot!  Besides that, I signed up for the Knot Hysteria retreat.  It’s the same crew of crazy gals that did the sock retreat I went to in April.  This retreat is all about silk….dying, knitting, and spinning silk.

Only I didn’t know how to spin and had no interest in spinning.  So I need to know how to spin by November 12th.  Um, that’s 4 weeks from today.  As I said, I’m an idiot!

Last night at 10:30, I was exhausted!!!  It was spelling word, Bible verse, social studies test, piano lesson, and leaf collection finishing night.  I walked into my now relatively clean bedroom and looked at the one full bobbin of singles, and decided to spin for a few minutes.

At midnight I had this!

At 1:30 AM, I had this!

I decided to ply my first batch of yarn.  That’s when you spin two strands together.  The “glumps” are probably from the first bobbin, although they were still showing up in the second one.  (Wow!  Excuse my bad color correcting on the photos.  It’s somewhere in between!)

Here’s my spinning for today.

It’s almost glump free!!!  I’ve got 13 ounces of this stuff, so that should be good practice.

And now…are you sitting down?  Look what else I did today.

I actually loaded a quilt onto the quilt machine.  I’ve got to get some of those quilt tops made into useful quilts!  It seems like forever since we’ve had any updated quilts around this house.  It’s time!

I’m headed back to the basement to get this thing quilted!!!

Oh, wait!!!  Come back!  I have two questions for you.

First, does anyone know where the charger for my camera battery is?  If I don’t find it soon, there will be no more blog posts, because I can’t do a post without photos.  Just can’t do it!

And secondly, if I manage to scrounge up something for dinner, can I put off going to the grocery store for yet another day?

Profound questions, huh?

  1. You definitely have the spinning bug now! Isn’t amazing how time passes by when you are spinning?

Your first attempts are impressive. You will be all set for the silk spinning in four weeks. No worries.

  2. My answers to your two questions is No and Yes.

  3. You just have way too much energy. You need to cut down on the caffeine.

  4. I can relate to the spinning quest – after a ten year absence from spinning I’m going to SOAR next weekend. I was going to spend all summer getting ready and just started working on it a couple of weeks ago. Hope it’s like riding a bike – that it will come back!

  5. Nice wheel!! You’re already spinning better! Practice is what everyone tells me. Beautiful colors in your quilt.

  6. Way to go you spinner you!! Each one looks better than the last; you may want to pace yourself though. I honestly would love to know how you keep going on what must be only a limited amount of sleep?!

    Question 1: Sorry no.
    Question 2: ABSOLUTELY!!
Enjoy all your fibre on this fall weekend.

  7. My answers to your questions are about the same as the other commenters:

    1. No and I’m sure none of your children know either (or your husband). My children get stricken with amnesia every time I ask this sort of question.

    2. Of course. I do it all the time. 😉

  8. #1…..No
    #2…..Absolutely
and I think the fabric line for “It’s a Bling Thing” is Charisma…not positive

  9. I’m so jealous that you’re going to the Knot Hysteria retreat! Not enough for me to learn to spin (yet)! You’re going to have a blast!
