Because Sometimes the Best Thing You Can Give Your Kid is an Addiction…To Yarn

What Day Is It Anyway?

I feel like I’m going in circles this week.  Meetings.  Kids.  Basketball.  Demolition control.   You know!  Life!  I love most of it, but I’m so ready for some stay home and knit and quilt days.

Yesterday, I started a mountain of laundry.  I have a little secret.  Do you know how I know when I absolutely have to do laundry?  My Hero has to wear the purple and green striped underwear.  That’s the last pair…unless he digs way in the back of the drawer for the Garfield Christmas underwear I gave him 20 years ago.  So, as I said, I started laundry.  (It’s almost done!  I have one load left.)

After the laundry was started, I headed for my sewing room for some instant gratification.  I made this Valentine runner.  I bought a Giddy charm pack on Friday while I was waiting for my sewing machine to be repaired.  It went together pretty quickly.   Then, late last night, I had the idiot brilliant idea to do this!

An observant person would ask why I’m hand quilting it when I have a quilt machine in my basement.  Good question.  I don’t know the answer.  A wise person would ask if I know how to hand quilt.  Another good question.  No, I don’t know how to hand quilt.  I’m using pearl cotton and large stitches.  I’m also using a needle that’s too big, but I can’t find another one.

I’m actually kind of surprised at how even it looks.  Here’s another shot.

It’s not perfect, but I think it will do.  I hope to have a finished photo to show you sooner rather than later.

I’m also doing a little bit of knitting.  A couple weeks ago I started Caireen by Susanna IC.  It’s not flying along, let me just say that.  I cast on 430 stitches.  On some of the cable rows, almost every stitch moves.  I do like it though!

The yarn is Blue Moon Fiber Arts Gaea.  It’s a 4 ply merino and it’s very soft.  I’ve done several decrease rows, so hopefully it will move along more quickly this week.

I also did a little spinning last night while waiting for our dinner to bake.  I’m spinning some BFL and silk mix for The Genius for Christmas.  No, not 2011.  I’m still trying to finish up 2010!  More on that after a little more progress is made.

Today the plan is to finish up laundry, knit for a while, and finish quilting my little runner.  My Hero and Dreamboy went to a Gopher basketball game, so the rest of us are going to hang out and eat leftovers.  How’s that for a plan?

Oh, and the dog and I might need a little nap.  She’s already started, so I’d better join her. See ya later!

  1. D’oh! I just removed your Caireen from the shared projects in the Socks that Rawk group because you didn’t have a yarn listed, or even a picture for me to guess if it was BMFA or not. Can you add this pic to your project page and reshare it please?

  2. I think You use the worlds smallest quilting machine : a needle and two hands ;-)) and it works and looks good. After finishing the runner you´ll never ever look so close at it like while quilting, so keep on quilting and enjoy it 🙂

  3. Love your heart square and can’t wait to see more. I love the look of outline quilting in contrasting thread. Love your knitting project too.

  4. Maria. LOVE your valentine runner … and your stitches are just fine! There is a deeply satisfying element to hand quilting – I hope that it captures you. Like yourself, I went to my sewing area this past weekend and started a valentine piece – all batiks! Great minds think in similar ways.

  5. Love that quilt! I’m not a Valentine’s Day kind of gal, but that quilt might just turn me into one!

  6. I absolutely LOVE the idea of hand quilting a table runner. I do own a sewing machine and took a quilting class MANY moons ago but really like the idea of doing one by hand. Your quilts are amazing! Can you recommend a kit or type that would be good for a novice?
