Because Sometimes the Best Thing You Can Give Your Kid is an Addiction…To Yarn

I (Used To) Love The ’80’s

I did it!  I finally finished painting my early marriage hutch.  After being married for more than 26 years, My Hero and I decided it was time for some new dining room furniture.  I had a plan for the 1986 oak dining room set.  I already posted photos of the dining room table here.  I don’t have the chairs painted yet, but the seats are recovered.

Are you ready for the big reveal?  Picture a very solid, but very 1980’s piece of oak furniture.  This is what you get after a little sanding, priming, painting, and glazing.

My sister and I gave the hutch a bit of sanding and some primer.  After that, a coat of Sherwin Williams green paint and Sherwin Williams gold glaze.

Add some crystal knobs, and you’re set.  Wow that sounds so easy, right?  It actually wasn’t hard.  It just took time.  Taping all that glass was really fun…..not!

Not bad for the second thing I’ve ever painted, huh?  Sometimes you get lucky, even though you have no idea what you’re doing.

I’m beyond thrilled with the addition of this piece in our guest room.  I’ve wanted something like this for a long time.  I’m gradually deciding what I want to display inside the hutch.  The whole bottom shelf is quilt books.  After that, I threw in some yarn, fabric, and some old tins that were my grandma’s.

I finished cleaning the room about 15 minutes before my parents arrived.  Our guest room gets plenty of use.  I’ve always wanted a room that was peaceful and inviting.  I hope it feels that way to our guests.

It’s not hard to find things to be thankful for this week!  On this Thanksgiving, all of our kids will be home,  Mom & Dad are here, and my sister and her family are hanging out with us.  God has truly blessed us, and I’m thrilled to celebrate His faithfulness during this Thanksgiving week.

Have a great week, and make sure to stop for a few minutes to think of something you’re thankful for.  It changes my whole outlook on life!

Oh….and may your holiday include lots of great food!

  6. Love your painted china cabinet. Would you mind sharing the color name of your paint? You have inspired me. I have been thinking of painting a book self that is in two pieces. Needs a couple of new shelves and new life. Thanks for sharing your project with us. Becky

    • It was an oak piece. I gave it a quick sand. I did one coat of primer and one coat of Sherwin Williams 6185 Escape Gray. I used Sherwin Williams metallic gold glaze. I painted it on pretty thick on the detailed parts, and just brushed it very finely on the flat parts. That’s all!
