It’s Spring…or not!

It’s so ugly outside right now!  We haven’t seen the sun in days!  Last night, The Genius flew in to Minneapolis for her spring break.  We drove home in thick fog.

So, it’s colors like this that give me hope that spring will indeed show up in Minnesota.

The pattern is Sweet Menagerie, a free quilt on Moda Bake Shop.  Roslyn did a beautiful job designing this quilt.  All you need is a jelly roll, some background fabric, and a little bit of fabric for one border. I used Verna by Kate Spain for Moda.

The only thing that caught me off guard is the number of borders.  I really don’t like putting borders on my quilts.  I think it’s because you think, “Wow, all I have left are the borders”.  And then it takes forever.  Well, this quilt has 5 borders!  But it’s finished and I like it a lot. I’m putting a pieced section in the back, because I guess I’m incapable of doing the simple math required to figure out the amount of backing I need.

Today I’m playing catch up.  I had at least one kid home sick every day this week, and I just didn’t get anything done.  So, today is laundry and cleaning up piles of junk that seemed to accumulate anywhere.

What I really want to do is quilt.  I have a couple of charm packs and a Schnibbles Tag Sale (scroll down)  pattern that I’m playing with.  I’m also in the mood to bake something.  I’m sure all the extra kids running around here would appreciate that.

I’m going to go turn some more lights on and pretend that the sun is shining.

  1. Maria, i love your quilt!! how funny is this…i used Sweet Menagerie, too! Only finished the top, but like you felt like i was going round and round with all those borders. I don’t know enough to know how to “revise” a pattern and make it work. Especially because i try to avoid math at all costs! Your print combos are so fun. Good luck on the backing and can’t wait to see how it comes together! hugs, kate

  2. It’s beautiful – I’m getting ready to make this quilt! 🙂 I have an older jelly roll that I think will look Swell. 🙂

  3. Like you, I love the look of borders but I’m not that thrilled about actually doing them. Yours look great! I really like the look of a pieced border too.

Spring is here in Florida. Pollen all over the place. Sneezing like crazy. We actually had to turn the AC on this past week because it was hot with the windows closed and the humidity was too high to leave the windows open. I hope we haven’t gone from winter to summer and skipped spring.

  4. That is just gorgeous!!! Spring will be here soon!!

  5. such a pretty quilt – SURE to drive off the gloomy Minnesota weather!!! I like the greens especially and those extra borders really pump it up – WONDERFUL! Can’t wait to see how you quilt this one.

  6. beautiful colors and great pattern what did you bake??
