Wow! I can’t believe I’ve been blogging for two years. That’s a lot of gabbing. My daughter, The Genius, and I decided to start a blog two years ago because she was leaving for college and we thought it would be a fun way to stay connected. Well, she got busy with school, and I became the sole blogger. (Feel free to surprise us any time with a guest post, Genius!) Now I just facebook her or call her.
I remember how hard it was to put a photo on a post. Then I had to figure out side bars. There were so many things to learn. It was all so confusing. Now it’s just fun! Blogging has provided some discipline for me. (It pushes me to finish things, or y’all will think I’m lame!!!) It’s also a way to journal my life.
So, it’s time to celebrate my two year blogiversary with a party and some prizes!!!!! Hang on, the prizes are at the end of the post! Patience, people!
First I have to show you what I’m working on! A few weeks ago I finished my Waves of Alaska. I’ve decided I love modular knitting and I love Noro yarn. So I immediately started searching for a new project. Here’s what I came up with!
I got the idea from a vest in Dazzling Knits by Patricia Werner. I immediately started digging through the Noro Kureyon I’d acquired. I’d had a vague idea at one time that I wanted to knit a Lizzard Ridge afghan, so I’ve collected some fun Noro colors. I started knitting, and I’ve been totally addicted.
In case you’re wondering what it’s going to be when it grows up, it’s an afghan. Right now, my afghan is big enough for the dog. As much as I love Georgie, there’s no way I’m knitting her a blanket. (A quilt maybe, but not knitting!)
I’m using six colors of Kureyon right now, and I think that will be good. I’ve cruised around on ebay and purchased more yarn. Some has worked great, and some is going to have to wait for the next project, whatever that may be.
I’m using Cascade 220 for the black and the orange and green centers. As you can see from the photo, a good soak and blocking is going to do wonders for this thing! You may be hearing about this project for a long time, because it’s going to take me a while. I’m not likely to get sick of the colors though!
Ok, I’m back to the two year anniversary and the prizes. I’m offering two prizes. One for the knitters, and another for the quilters. If you’re both (like me!) you’ll have to decide which one you’d rather win!
So, without further ado, I’ve chosen two skeins of Schaefer Anne for the knitters. The colorway is Quilt Blocks. If you’re not familiar with this yarn, It’s wool, mohair, and nylon. You could make two pairs of socks or a gorgeous lace project, because you’ll have 1,120 yards of yarn to work with. It’s not quite as bright as the photo. (Have I mentioned that I’m going to learn how to run Photoshop?)
For the quilters I have 18 fat quarters of Daydream by Deb Strain for Moda. That’s 4 1/2 yards of fabric, and it’s gorgeous.

Or, you can just read the comments before yours and pilfer someone else’s idea! That wouldn’t be as much fun though. Also, let me know if you’d like to be entered to win the yarn or the fabric. My very favorite and what led me to your blog the first time was your still unfinished Demask Kauni, but my favorite finished project is “Hydrangea” in that beautiful color with those beads. I still want to do it, but haven’t gotten up the nerve yet. I’m not a quilter, just a knitter so enter me in the yarn pool. I love your blog!

I REALLY like the Eyelet Cardi because there is no way I could make that. In fact, I don’t think i could knit any project you make. How do you do it, laundry, meals and all of it?

As far as finished projects, I like your Waves of Alaska. However, I am really fascinated by the afghan you are knitting currently. I would like to knit one like that. Years ago I did machine quilting, so I enjoy seeing quilting projects, but currently I am knitter.

You know, you left us with a difficult dilemma, and it was much harder than a strange trivia question.
Choose our FAVORITE project of yours? Oh. Considering I’m a self-confessed groupie of all your projects and your blog, that is a VERY hard thing to make ME do.
But I have to say now: my all time favorite is The Scarlet Moth Shawl (March 2009). You had the most FABULOUS posts making a “mystery” project in a winter setting with a ga-zillion young people around to feed and watch out for … and then compulsive night knitting to get the project done. It was a LOT of fun to “go through” it with you. In hind sight, I now know you probably subconsciously decided to do it to take your mind off the mundane things of that trip (been there, done that), like figuring out if there is enough toilet paper, milk, and dishwashing detergent around to keep up with things.
Seriously: CONGRATULATIONS and thank you for sharing your life and family, and …. Ms. Cutie herself, the Doggie Queen Ms. Georgie!!

Congrats on your blogversary! I LOVE your Hypoteneuse! I think we actually talked about this on Ravelry…yours is so bright and colorful and mine is made from natural colored alpaca…very bland…but I loved this pattern.

Actually my favorite project you’ve put on your blog is your work in progress: your family. Keep making it your priority and your crowning jewel. It can change in moments as I’ve found recently. I do, however, like your knitting and quilting. I’m better at knitting than quilting so I’d like to be entered in the knitting. All of your shawls are beautiful and your quilts make my jaw drop. But, I love the Noni Bad you felted with the Cascade 220. I was amazed at how fast you finished that.

OMG Maria well I am always asking for your help on one of your projects. But I have to say that My favorite is the Wing Of the Month Blamket and Oh yah the most important thing I am a knitter. But I also loved your shawl that you just finished the alaska one and I have also started an Lizard Blanket along time ago for my son and Now maybe you will encourage me to finish it. But you are an amazing Knitter and Quilter and I can sew a lick.
I love reading your blog. It lets me know that I am not the only one that neglects the laundry and dishes to knit. But when it gets so high I know that it is time to put the knitting down and start the laundry.

Happy blogiversary! I found your blog through moda bake shop. I love that site! I am a quilter and a knitter so I love everything you make, but my absolute favorite is buttercup. My favorite project of yours is the Koigu Shawl II. I have a thing for Koigu and I followed your progress as you worked on that one. It came out just lovely!

OMGosh! It’s been over a year since I found your blog! All your projects are beautiful, including quilts that I know nothing about (I don’t even sew!) I have always wanted to knit socks, so of all your finishes those are the ones I am most in awe of. Especially since my knitting skills are non existant. But I also love the purse Thelma’s day out. I tried to find the pattern here in the US, after seeing your purse again I may have to begin searching anew.

I started reading your blog because you knit AND quilt (so do I) and I was curious about how you found time for both. I am NOT staying up until 3am, but I’m now back to quilting and my first love, cross stitching, in addition to the knitting and crocheting, because of you. Thanks! (My husband has other words, but there you go, he’s happy if I’m happy!). I love your Taupe and Black quilt, partly because it’s gorgeous, partly because I know how much time you spent getting it right. I’d like more fabric please (as if THAT stash isn’t big enough).

Waves of Alaska is my favorite of all your projects. I love the colors of your quilts, too. However, best of all is your sewing/craft room with the wild red wallpaper. Still Waves of Alaska is the project I choose.
Since I quit quilting in 1983, I would choose the yarn prize. I’ve never knit with Schaeffer Anne.

I found your blog through my Mom and have been reading for about a year. I LOVE seeing all of your projects, even though I don’t leave comments often. I love the fact that you call your husband your hero, and that you are still happy and content together. It is a nice role model for my husband and I. I am really a crocheter, but have recently begun trying my hand at knitting, so I would absolutely LOVE to make the Miralda shawl someday. Maybe I will win the yarn and get a chance! LOL How do you get it all done? I barely get to sleep! But, most of all – I love seeing your family. It reminds me so much of mine, doing things together and loving to be together. Treasure it, and love it. Family is the most precious gift we have, and I recently learned just how precious it is.

Happy blogiversary! Phew, having to pick a favorite among your projects is really hard. I love you scarfs, especially the hydrangea. The soft colour, it looks so, so soft to touch. But then there is that cute Bethany Jumper you made, which I adore too. I still want to make something like that for my little girl, but haven’t just yet found the courage to start 😉

I’m de-lurking to comment. So far my favorite completed project is the neon string/rag quilt you posted earlier this month. I love how the model was smiling in the photo… Neon colors are happy colors. One of the joys of making things with love are the smiles these handmade objects create.
I’m a beginner quilter. Starting my first real quilt as soon as my fabric/supplies arrive.

Hydrangea! Hands down favorite! It’s what drew me to your site and made me start to knit it….needless to say I’m not as fast as you. I have you on the daily sites I check. As a fellow homeschooler, mom of 5, doing a lot of the same transition stuff as you, knitter and quilter, it is quite easy to relate to the things you do and say. Your wit makes me laugh a lot and takes some of the stress away to know that others are out there doing the same things I’m doing. Happy Blog Day and keep it up. Tough choice but I think it’s the Waves of Alaska shawl. I’m a BIG fan of Noro and think it fits the modular knitting of that shawl exceptionally well. And the colours…. just scrummy.
As an avid knitter, if I were to win, I’d like to be in the knitting competition. I’d even pay for the yarn to be shipped to the UK!

I found your blog when someone else mentioned your Koigu Irish Diamond shawl on theirs. I fell in love with it and dreamed of making one, but haven’t done so, at least not yet. I have enjoyed reading your blog and looking at your projects since I found it last summer. I went back and read all your posts and feel a kinship with you since I also have 5 kids, quilt and knit. You are much more prolific than I am in the amount of projects you’ve accomplished. I especially like your shawls, the lacier the better! I liked your beaded Swallowtail and your Hydrangea from last summer. I have also enjoyed looking at your quilts and have similar taste in colors.

I am in love with both your Trevi Shawl and your rag quilt. I just melt when I look at the color of your shawl. Ahhhh…green! Your rag quilt is inspirational to get me back into quilting. I would dearly love to win the wool, as I can knit much better than I can quilt. I would love to get my hands on that beautiful yarn because New Zealand just doesn’t stock that kind of loveliness. I can only get regular wool and I am bored! I want to try my hand at knitting Ysoldas little shawl, your scarlet moth is my favourite project, but I think it would be a little too hard to start with so I will start with something smaller and work up to it! You are a popular lady, I have to say my favorite project of yours is your Koigu Irish Diamond Shawl, I have all my koigu purchased but I haven’t begun it yet but one day I definitely will, I saw that shawl, came to your blog and have not left since!!! All of your projects are sheer inspiration to me Congrats on 2 years, and if I should by some slim chance win I would love the yarn but you knew that already!!!!

Congratulations on two years of beautiful and inspiring projects. My favorite is the Hyrna Herborgar shawl but it was very difficult trying to narrow it down to just one. As a confirmed and hard core knitter, I would love to get my hands on the yarn.

Congratulations on 2 years of blogging! Being new to your blog I had to do some backtracking from where I did enter into your world, and I have a confession to make: I can’t decide on one favorite. So I will narrow it down to your 2009 finished projects. My favorite quilt project: Fanciful Flowers; and a knit project toss-up: Miralda’s Shawl and Waves of Alaska. Whew! Glad that part is over.
Since I still have no idea what I’m doing with yarn, I would take the fabrics should I win.

Love to quilt & knit. Just not enough time to do both as much as I would like. Your shawls are very wonderful & your socks like way to much fun. But for the quilts “Monterey Medallion” won my heart. So if by chance, it would be the fabric as I tend to get just a little more of the quilting done than of the knitting & beside’s would look great for my son & his family.

My favorite finished project of yours is the Caricia shawl. I love the color, and I love Ann Hanson. Maybe I’ll knit it myself one day… once I’ve gotten through my stash. I’m a knitter not a quilter (yet…) so if I were lucky enough to win, I’d choose the yarn.

Okay, I’ve reviewed them all. If I were to pick a knitting project, I would pick one of the shawls. But since I’m sort of a has been in knitting, I think Fanciful Flowers Quilt gets my vote. I would of course like to be thrown into the pool of people wanting the fabric. And of course, I too, like to read your blog.

Well I’m a knitter and a quilter so although the decision might seem hard there really is no contest – I LOVE THE Damask Kauni. I know it doesn’t fit you but OMG It’s beautiful!!!
That said I think I’d really love the fat quarters! I’ve just started quilting again after too many years to mention so they would be a welcome addition to my growing stash!

Happy blogiversary! I’ve enjoyed you since day one and Lexi (age 18) inspired me to knit my first lace shawl this summer…I’ve loved every minute (well, almost every minute!)! Choosing a favorite is like being a child (or adult!) in a candy shop…too many beautiful things to choose from. I’m a knitter and your Wing of the Moth shawl is right up there with some of my very favorites. I would love this beautiful yarn to knit another lace shawl (really a prayer shawl) for my dear son-in-law’s mom who has just been diagnosed with breast cancer. She has a long road ahead of her, and the Wing of the Moth shawl would certainly provide a large hug and many prayers to surround her on her journey. Not to mention it would also help to keep her warm during our New England winter! Her surgery is scheduled for Spetember 2…I know I could finish it in time if I do a knitting marathon!

It is hard to pick! You’ve done so many really nice things. I do like Hyrna Herborgar. Different! I guess put me in as a knitter. My sister is a quilter and if I knew she would love those fabrics (I do!) I would say, put me in the quilters and I’d pass it on. I do think, that her tastes are too far in the pinks for your lovely turquise.

I really love all your projects – both quilting and knitting. I really like the Bluebonnet Trail quilt – simple design, but so striking with the touch of applique in the center and the on-point setting. I also drool over the knitting projects, but unfortunately I only know the two basic knitting stitches….so please enter me into the quilting drawing. Congrats on your 2 year anniversary!

Happy Blogiversary!!!! I am always inspired and awed at your work and I thank you for sharing with us. It is very hard to pick just one of your projects as a favorite. Your lace knitting is so beautiful I would drive to Minnesota just to see them live. I must say the one that makes me drool every time is an unfinished one, the Damask Kauni. Although I would love the directions for Mike (I know that was not yours but still a blog co-founder) I am not a quilter so I would like to be in the win-fab-yarn-group. Favorite project? That’s a hard one. Your knitting is all so lovely. I would have to say either your Glorious Koigu (Irish Diamond Shawl) or your Damask Kauni (Kauni Rainbow Caridigan).
I haven’t done much reading in the blogosphere this summer. I’ve been caught up in finishing my new soaker pattern. Now that it’s finished, I thought I’d come take a look at what you’ve been up to. I love having a look at your latest projects, and you always manage to make me laugh. Your daughter and the helmet! Major LOLing going on over here! I must remember that for when my almost 16yo starts driving!

Wow, this is easy! While doing my research for the Swallowtail Shawl, I came upon your Swallowtail Shawl II. Immediately added it to my favorites. It’s still there, because it is still a favorite. Absolutely beautiful. I’m pretty sure that at the same time that I faved the shawl, I discovered your blog. I’ve been enjoying ever since. I love all your quilts, but my fav is the Rebel Rose quilt. It is a beautiful line of fabric and I just love the pattern you used! I know nothing about knitting but you make it look like a snap!! Well, really this is probably your favorite niece in the entire world. My favorite project on your blog would have to be the Waves of Alaska, although every project that you do is amazing.
Have you happened to notice the colors of the of pieces of un-sewn quilt that you are offering for a prize? They are the exact colors of my bedroom and I would really like to follow in your footsteps and become a crazy quilter lady.
You must have chosen these fabrics with me in mind. So I would love to enter the contest for the fabrics with my name already on the back of them.

Hi Maria, I have to say that I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your Waves of Alaska. It is the project that caught my eye just a few weeks ago and I have already started one of my own ( I haven’t gotten very far). Noro has been a longtime favorite of mine and I am always looking for new projects where I can use it. That is how I stumbled upon you and your blog 🙂 I’ve made a felted bag based on the Lizard Ridge using Noro. I plan on making the African Adventure Bag which is similar to your most recent project. Being a knitter I would like to be entered for the yarn. Thanks for having a blog that ALWAYS makes me smile and for being such a breath of fresh air!!!

I am SOOOO late to the party, but I’ve been on vacation from home and blogging, so I have a good excuse. Just to let you know….when I came back, yours is the 1st blog I looked at 🙂
If I limit myself to 2009 finished knits – I’d have to say…. Miralda’s Shawl is my favorite, but it’s not an easy choice with all of the other gorgeous knits (*Loksins – I LOVE those too) and quilts!
I’ll pick the yarn (my fabric stash is exploding already!)
PS – you started almost exactly one year after me – my 3 year is this month
